India-Italy ties: How the ‘melodi’ came after setbacks, what is at stake

India and Italy, two nations significantly contrasting yet interconnected by a common thread of cultural and economic affinities, have been witnessing a novel phase in their bilateral relationship. Over the years, the diplomatic ties between the two countries have encountered a thrilling roller-coaster journey shaped by both melodi (melodies) and setbacks. The past few years have seen relations characterised by a series of highs and lows, with the ‘melodi’ truly starting to blossom following a period of hurdles and disappointments.

Primarily, the mariner’s case inflicted a significant setback on India-Italy relations. The case led to a diplomatic standoff when two Indian fishermen were killed mistakenly by Italian marines deployed on the ship Enrica Lexie off the Indian coast in 2012. The incident strained bilateral relations, and sparked off prolonged jurisdiction and legal debates that left a negative impact on the then thriving economic and political connections.

However, like in any meaningful relationship, the ability to rekindle harmony amidst chaos held the key. The bilateral relationship witnessed significant changes when Italian Prime Minister Prof. Giuseppe Conte held a virtual bilateral summit with Indian PM Narendra Modi in 2020. The leaders concurred on a shared approach to dealing with global challenges and vowed to make concerted efforts in reviving the derailed relationship.

Contributing to the ‘melodi’, the two nations have realised that their relations should not only be defined by the mariners’ case, but also by their shared economic interest. Indeed, India and Italy have a lot at stake – Italy is currently India’s 5th largest trading partner in the EU, with bilateral trade amounting to $9.52 billion in 2019-20, and there are around 400 Italian companies active in India.

Moreover, there are opportunities for deepening cooperation in various areas including renewable energy, medical science, and innovative technology. Both nations have started to move beyond past issues, refocusing on future potential and their shared goals.

In conclusion, while India-Italy relations have experienced a series of setbacks, recent developments suggest a ‘melodi’ has begun to play out. There are challenges for both nations, but their renewed commitment to cement this affable relationship is a testament to their mutual understanding and desire for progress.
